MeLCat Update

Image

For review of current policies and procedures check out:

George Marck's term on the state-wide MeLCat policies and procedures committee ends this year.  Corinne Thompson, from Siena Heights University, will continue to serve on the committee. George has the following updates on MeLCat:

Server Upgrades and Downtime: In early December MeLCat has been scheduled to move to new servers.  This will be a lengthy process and will take services down for up to 10 days.  Please make plans accordingly for announcing this interruption in service at your library.

Major Influx of A/V Materials Anticipated for MeLCat: Michigan State University has received a rather large donation of approximately one million DVDs.  The University has decided to keep this collection and intends to make the titles available for requesting via the MeLCat system.  If your library does not yet participate in MeLCat A/V resource sharing now is the time to consider adding this service for your patrons. Please contact the DALNET office for more information.

U.S. Copyright Office
Orphan Works and Mass Digitization : A Report of the Register of Copyrights / U.S. Copyright Office

"The Copyright Office is reviewing the problem of orphan works under U.S. copyright law in continuation of its previous work on the subject and to advise Congress on possible next steps for the United States. The Office has long shared the concern with many in the copyright community that the uncertainty surrounding the ownership status of orphan works does not serve the objectives of the copyright system."
