Reciprocal Borrowing Update
Horizon configurations are complete and three DALNET libraries are in
the
testing phase of the DALNET Reciprocal Borrowing project. The
office has
made a step-by-step procedures guide to help the testing partners, who
will
offer feedback and suggestions on the project, documentation, and
process.
Project Managers will also review the procedures at their July
9th meeting.
Testing will end in Mid-July and the go live date for the rest of
the Reciprocal
Borrowing participants will be in late July or early August. As a
reminder,
the participating libraries in the DALNET Reciprocal Borrowing project
at
the start will be Macomb Community College, Oakland Community College,
Oakland
County Library, Rochester College, University of Detroit Mercy, Walsh
College,
and Wayne County Community College.
RDA in a Nutshell
DALNET will be hosting a LYRASIS Webinar titled "RDA in a Nutshell"
on Friday July 13th from 12:30 to 2 PM. The event will take place
at Wayne
State University in the Purdy/Kresge Library, Auditorium.
From LYRASIS, the consortium responsible for the webinar: "This session
will provide an overview of the essentials of RDA and its relationship
to
FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records), review the
current
timeline for RDA implementation in the US, and highlight some
differences
in cataloging practice RDA would introduce. Catalogers who are just
beginning
to think about RDA and FRBR will find it a useful introduction as
well."
The learning outcomes of this webinar according to LYRASIS are as
follows
1) understand the relationship between RDA and FRBR; 2) know several
prominent
differences between an RDA record and a current, AACR2 record; and 3)
be
aware of the timing of RDA's likely implementation in the U.S. library
community.
This free event is open to DALNET Members. Attendees may request
a parking pass during registration. Registration
now open.
Union Catalog Update
The union catalog is bigger and better than ever, with almost 1.3
million bibliographic records and 1.75 million items. There are
lots of projects underway to continue to enhance the shared system
catalog. Quarterly authority file updates are scheduled to begin
this summer. This should help to keep our records updated for new
acquisitions and authority file changes. The DALNET office is
also working with the Cataloging and Database Standards committee to
ensure that the shared system is ready for RDA implementation.
Later this year the DALNET office will begin to work on removing bibs
without items. Libraries should make sure all bib records have a
item/holdings record attached if your library intends to keep
them. Libraries participating in "Get it Local!" will each
receive special reports for items/collections that need work to prepare
for reciprocal borrowing.

Many libraries are shifting acquistions budgets from print to digital
resources. When considering a purchase of a large digital
collection it is best to inform the DALNET office of your acquisitions
time-frame early on so that a batch load of your digital resource
records can be scheduled in a timely manner. Just email the
details to dalnet@wayne.edu so
that we can assist in your collection development planning.
