New Test Server Online
[December 14, 2001]
DALNET has completed the first phase of upgrades to the DALNET servers. The "new"
test server came online on Monday, December 10. DALNET originally purchased three
SUN E450's. One became the Test server; the second the WebPAC server; and the third
was intended to become a backup WebPAC server, but only was used temporarily for
iPAC.
As we reviewed the equipment upgrade plans developed in 2000, we determined that
there were some better options. Using the unused third E450 server as a base, we
purchased some larger disk drives to give us needed extra capacity for Test databases.
Over a period of weeks this fall, the DALNET staff experimented with various options
and perfected a process for configuring and loading all the software and member
databases. This model will be used to upgrade the production server during the winter
holidays.
Following the upgrade of the Production server, the existing WebPAC server and the
former Test server will be clustered together to provide WebPAC, iPAC, RPA and other
services. The disk drives that had been in the "third" E450 have already been installed in
the other E450s and will provide sufficient capacity. The clustering of those two servers
will provide redundancy. If one of those servers fails, the other should take over
immediately with no interruption of service.
We will update you on our continued progress with the server upgrades.
