New Server Installation and Upgrades Completed
[May 6, 2005]
In the past month, DALNET has replaced its current production server with a
new Sun V880. After bringing it online, the old server was decommissioned and
returned to Sun. This move also allowed us to perform simultaneous upgrades
of the Sun Solaris OS (from 8 to 9) and Sybase (from 12.0 to 12.5.3) with
much less downtime than if performed separately. Both Solaris 9 and Sybase
12.5.3 provide considerably more flexibility and power than the earlier versions.
In particular, in Sybase 12.5.3 it is possible to make many configuration changes
and have those take immediate effect without a Sybase reboot. Other
benefits of moving to the V880 include lower ongoing maintenance costs
and room for expansion. We are currently using about half the processing
power and memory available and are poised to add new members or provide
other services to existing members.
