Meet the DALNET Staff: Scott Muir
[July 16, 2002]
Scott Muir, DALNET's Assistant Director, brings to our organization
a strong background in library technology administration.
After receiving his MLS from Emory University in Atlanta, GA., he began his
professional career at Georgia Power Co. And when the company decided to
automate its library, Scott was asked to plan and implement the new system. This
introduction to library automation was the beginning of his extensive experience with
integrated library systems. Scott went on to serve for several years as Systems
Officer for the University of Alabama Libraries in Tuscaloosa and coordinated their
move from VTLS to NOTIS as their new automated system. Originally from Oak
Ridge, TN, home of the Manhattan Project, Scott left the warmer southern climates
to serve as Head of Systems for Boston College Libraries before coming to DALNET
as epixtech's Project Lead in 1999.
Throughout his career Scott has continued to expand his publishing record and
be an active participant in professional associations. His most recent article,
"Setting Priorities for the Library's System Office" appeared in Library Hi-Tech,
v.19:3, 2001. As a member of the Library Information and Technology Association,
a division of ALA, Scott is an acknowledged leader, having been elected to the
organization's Board of Directors and serving on the Executive Committee.
Through his past participation with the NOTIS User Group, Scott met Anaclare Evans.
As DALNET's migration
from NOTIS to Horizon was scheduled and faced a completion deadline of
December 31, 1999, she recommended that he consider joining the staff.
In March 1999 he did, serving as the Project Lead with
epixtech, and beginning his current appointment earlier this year.
The library systems career has been a different direction from Scott's
undergraduate major in Speech and Theater at Tennessee Technological
University. His love for the theater is centered on the technical side including lighting
and set design. And, as a season ticket holder to many of the area's performance
theaters, he stays abreast of the automation in that field too. As a community
service Scott facilitates a youth discussion group.
Scott joins many of his staff as a certified canine lover. During this heat wave
Zachary, a Welsh Terrier and Max, a standard Schnauzer are excellent guard dogs--
--they attack the lawn sprinklers—making sure that Scott gets as wet as they.
