Rochester College Dedicates New Library
[October 4, 2002]
On Friday, September 27, 2002, Rochester College held a dedication ceremony for their
new library - named in honor of Ennis and Nancy Ham. Mr. Ham is the Chairman of the
Rochester College National Advancement Board. The Hams were major benefactors of
the new library building giving over one million dollars to the project. Following the a
ceremony, held in the Westside Central Auditorium, guests went to the new library for a
ribbon cutting ceremony and then released maroon and green balloons. The Ham library
features areas for traditional library collections, study rooms, electronic classrooms, a
conference room, storage for older materials, and a commons area space where students
can take a break from studying. Attendees included staff from Oakland Community
College, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and DALNET staff. Margaret Auer, a member of
the Rochester College Library Advisory Committee, was also present for the dedication.
More
details are available from the Detroit News.
Rochester College is one of DALNET's newest members, having joined in 2001. As part
of their plans to move to their new facility, Library Director Steven Bowers was
determined to leave the old card catalog behind and make use of an electronic catalog.
The library staff worked very hard to load their collections into Horizon, initially by
using AltPac to obtain records from other DALNET member sites. After additional funds
were secured, they were able to load records acquired from MARCIVE. True to his
plans, Steven was able to have a functional iPac to demonstrate for their dedication,
making Rochester College DALNET's first site to go live with iPac,
WarriorLINK.
The past few years have been a busy time for Steven. In addition to planning the new
library building and the move, Steven became manager of the library and then Director,
following his graduation with his MLS degree from WSU in April 2002. DALNET staff
congratulates Steven and the staff of Rochester College on their many accomplishments.
