E. Azalia Hackley Collection (DPL) Open House
[November 24, 2004]
Barbara E. Martin (Detroit Public Library) hosted the E. Azalia Hackely Collection Open
House on Saturday, November 8 in the Friends Auditorium of Detroit Public Library
(DPL). Curator Martin used the recently developed collection of
19th and 20th Century
Sheet Music of Negro Themes to showcase some of the
materials that can be found in this collection. Martin described how this began in part
with the money from DALNET that was used to create a digital lab at DPL. She then
described the collaborative efforts between DPL and DALNET staff to bring this project
to fruition.
Ms. Martin provided a thorough demonstration of the project highlighting the background
of the collection and selection of the Greenstone software. She showed the audience the
bibliographies and biographies that have been complied and pointed out the copyright
issues involved. Then she went into the heart of the project and showed a number of
searches and the images. Even in a large auditorium, these covers of this sheet music
were quite clear. Martin explained to the audience that while some of the covers are
offensive to us today, they are a part of the history of music and of African-Americans.
Martin also listed a number of new collections that have been acquired in recent months
for the Hackley collection, including the Leonteen Napier Photograph Collection and the
Major Quincy "Mule" Holley Manuscript Collection. A number of the collection donors
and family members attended the program.
Juliette Machie, Associate Director of Public Services at Detroit Public Library
announced the formation of the Friends of the E. Azalia Hackely Collection. Machie
described the importance of this Friends organization and invited audience members to
consider becoming members of the Friends. Following the program, attendees went to
the third floor of DPL for light refreshments, to tour the collections, and view special
collection exhibits mounted for the Open House.
