DALNET Joins MLC and OCLC
[April 2007]
The DALNET office recently placed membership in the Michigan Library Consortium and has contracted to be a full-cataloging member of OCLC. The office also was assigned an official library barcode prefix for the national library barcode registry. Individual DALNET member libraries have long used these services but the consortium office has never officially had its own presence in these organizations.
By joining MLC, staff members of the DALNET office will be able to participate in MLC activities and training at reduced membership rates. This will allow DALNET employees to attend more training for development and support of DALNET members. Membership in MLC will also allow DALNET to be more involved in MLC initiatives and activities. Joining MLC was part of the process for becoming a cataloging member of OCLC.
OCLC membership for the DALNET office will allow DALNET employees to better understand and support DALNET members who use OCLC services. DALNET staff members will be trained in use of OCLC products such as the Connexion Browser and Client, and will have access to FirstSearch services and WorldCat. DALNET will now be able to place holdings in WorldCat for consortium wide resources, under the membership symbol DALNT. This will allow DALNET to have a more visible presence in library utilities already used by the constituents of our member libraries. DALNET was pleased to be one of the first institutions to register in the new WorldCat Registry that recently debuted.
