Meet the DALNET Staff: Martin Austin
[February 22, 2002]
English literature as an undergraduate major and a graduate degree in Library Science
previously was a formula leading to a position as an academic reference librarian. But for
Martin Austin, our UNIX Administrator and a man of the 90's, the changing technologies
required by libraries held a greater allure. He credits faculty members of the Library and
Information Science Program at Wayne State University for encouraging him to pursue
his interest in the Internet. And, he gives credit to Ana Fidler, former DALNET staff
member, for sharing her comprehensive knowledge about automated library systems.
Recently Martin has been involved in reorganizing and upgrading DALNET's servers.
He has also had a key role in working to solve network problems and recommending
upgrades to provide better service to our members.
Martin has a love of music that follows a circuitous route from the inner soul and shining
luster of artists like Dave Mathews and Tori Amos to hip-hop's star, Lauryn Hill. Other
hobbies for Martin include reading all of the latest technology reports, campaigning for a
SPAM-free and access- free Internet and a keen interest in movements that support
human dignity.
