iPac 2.01

[August 20, 2002]
DALNET's recent upgrade to Horizon 7.0.3 has set the stage for implementation of iPac 2.01, the latest upgrade and replacement to WebPac. Horizon 7.0.3 is the bridge product that allows WebPac and iPac to run simultaneously. It is important to move to iPac 2.01 now because support for WebPac will cease to exist with Horizon 7.2. With that in mind, DALNET has developed iPacs for some of the training databases and anticipates the creation of iPacs for members' test databases soon.

Last year, the iPac Working Group (IWG) developed recommendations for the upgrade to iPac. DALNET is following the recommendations as the implementation proceeds. New customized interfaces for each member will be created that include their institutional logo, welcome text, and institutional colors. Language and locations limits will be configured according to lists provided by members. Members will be able to stop and start their own iPacs. The IWG also added fields to the MARC maps used in WebPac keyword indices. The new maps will be used to create the iPac keyword indices. Recent tests of the indexing process indicate this will be much faster than with WebPac, WSU Development database of 1.8 million records was indexed in 22 hours.

As this project moves forward, members will be asked to provide information regarding their preferences of interface design, limits and keyword indices. For a good example of how iPac 2.01 can be set up, see University of Chicago Library. Members may also want to review their WebPac statistics to see which indices patrons most frequently use. We are looking forward to working with you on this project and welcome any questions you may have.
