Intelligent Connections Audit
[March 1, 2002]
Intelligent Connections (IC) made a presentation to the DALNET Staff on the results of
the recently completed audit of the Horizon Library Servers at WSU. The report
provided information on the WebPAC, Horizon Test, and Horizon Production
Servers. The report was in six basic sections: Equipment Inventory, CPU Utilization,
Networking Statistics, Memory Usage, Disk Input/Output, and a section describing
findings and recommendations.
IC's assessment showed that the recently reconfigured Production Server was well within
normal tolerances for CPU utilization and the DALNET staff are going to take an
additional look at the WebPAC and Test servers make a few changes and run the tests
again. The networking statistics on these machines showed similar findings. There were
not any concerns with the Disk I/O findings.
The Memory usage on the Production Server is the one area where DALNET will need to
take some definitive action. IC's study shows that the amount of available memory in
the Production Server is seriously low and will need to be addressed in the immediate
future. Currently there is four GB of RAM in that machine – IC recommended we install
an additional four GB for a total of eight. The memory usage in the other machines was
all within satisfactory tolerances.
DALNET staff have already started further study as suggested by IC and begun work on
the changes that were recommended. Much of this work will be completed by late
March, with the exception of the additional memory for the Production Server that will
require an additional purchase.
IC is still working on the telecommunications study they did with six DALNET sites:
Beaumont Hospital, Macomb Community College, Oakland Community College,
Oakland County Law Library, Walsh College, and Wayne County Community College
District. They expect to have the final report and an executive summary completed before
the end of March. We plan to share parts of this telecommunications study that do not
compromise security or confidentiality at the sites surveyed.
