Meet the DALNET Staff: George Marck
[March 29, 2002]
George Marck has been with DALNET for fifteen years and as a member of the
inaugural staff has been an integral part of all of the technological changes
implemented by our consortium. He received his undergraduate degree in
Computer Science from Wayne State University and his MBA from University of
Michigan Dearborn.
George's primary responsibilities at DALNET include the Horizon database
administration and upgrades, WebPAC, and Remote Patron Authentication
(RPA). He has managed DALNET's migration to Horizon Releases 5.3 and 6.0,
and he will manage the upgrades to Horizon 7.0.3 and 7.2 during the coming
months. Most recently George has worked closely with Scott Muir and Jackie
Wrosch to improve the look and operation of RPA, particularly so it will
seamlessly integrate with the MiLE project.
During the last two years, George has been taking Suzuki piano training classes
and quickly became qualified to teach the training through Book I. Suzuki is both
a philosophy that views music learning as a natural extension of the process of
language learning (music is simply another foreign language to be learned and
the simple process that very young children learn to speak can be applied to
music learning) and a method of music teaching that emphasizes auditory input
over note reading for teaching early music learners. There are a total of seven
books in the training. George plans to complete the training through Book IV and
to also take a teacher practicum. He currently has eleven students who all
recently performed well in their first recital.
George is also very active with the First United Methodist Church of Royal Oak
where he plays the keyboard for their Sunday night service. He serves as one of
two lay leaders for the church and is planning a mission trip with other church
members to Lithuania this summer. He has also helped to organize a series of
folk concerts that are held at the church. The series called
"Who's at First" features local and nationally known folk artists.
George enjoys his family of three very talented daughters who have also
inherited the Marck musical talents. His oldest daughter Sarah is an
accomplished Irish step dancer and will be traveling to the British Isles and
Ireland this summer with the People to People program. Daughter Krista
participates in jazz dancing and Anna plays the piano.
