Committee Structure
[May 3, 2002]
One area that the DALNET Planning Team is reviewing is DALNET's committee
structure. Many members have commented on the amount of time spent working on
DALNET Committees, while other members have expressed concern that they are not
representative or seem to lack a clear charge. Our goal is to advise DALNET on the
organization and committee structure that will help DALNET meet new challenges.
During the past few years, a number of the Task Forces (TF), that were set up to help
DALNET and the Steering Committee implement Horizon, completed their assignment.
TF members were thanked for their work and the TF was retired. Two examples of this
were the Horizon Course Reserves TF and the Search Engine TF. This model worked
very well, with a limited imposition on TF members' time. Other TFs are however still in
place. We also added a major committee in response to the Ameritech Grant,
Information Hub Development Committee (IHDC), and several TFs to address digital
initiatives and gateway issues.
In late 2000, the Steering Committee and the IHDC held a brainstorming session to
discuss DALNET's needs for a new committee structure. This healthy candid discussion
moved into a creative design that places the Project Managers in a key role in DALNET's
future. Many of the ideas generated in that discussion are receiving serious consideration
by the Planning Team.
As the Planning Team moves ahead, we want to insure that we address all the key needs
TFs and committees are now fulfilling. To do this, the Planning Team has developed a
web-based survey for response by DALNET committee members. The goal of this
survey is to help identify key activities of the various committees and TFs and determine
a vision for their future. The Planning Team will use this information to formulate a
recommendation to the Board that will help determine what new committees or TFs are
needed, which need to be reorganized, and which can be retired
Please take them time to respond
to the survey when it announced. Your input into DALNET's future structure is vital.
