Inaugural AANM Book Award Celebration Held

[September 2007]
The Arab American National Museum (AANM) held its inaugural book award ceremony on Thursday September 6th, 2007. Three winning books and two honorable mentions were chosen by a committee of readers. The winners of the Arab American National Museum Book Award were Rashid Khalidi for The Iron Cage: The story of the Palestinian Struggle for Statehood (Adult Non-Fiction), Hisham Matar for In the Country of Men (Adult Fiction), and Eve Bunting and Ted Lewin for One Green Apple (Children or Young Adult). The honorable mentions, Tim Jon Semmerling for "Evil" Arabs in American Popular Film: Orientalist Fear and Randa A. Kayyali for The Arab Americans, were both in the Adult Non-Fiction category.

The mission of the Arab American National Museum Book Award is to encourage " . . . the publication and excellence of books that preserve and advance the understanding, knowledge, and resources of the Arab American community by celebrating the thoughts and lives of Arab Americans." The award’s purpose is " . . . to inspire authors, educate readers and foster a respect and understanding of Arab American culture."

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2007 book award. The nomination deadline is February 1, 2008. Visit the book award site for more information on the criteria for nomination.
