How to Use MiLE

  1. First try your search in Beaumont Hospital Medical Library's catalog. If the book you want is available from either the Royal Oak or Troy Medical Libraries, MiLE does not apply.

  2. If the book you want is not owned at either Medical Library, logon to MiLE.

  3. Be prepared to enter the barcode from your Beaumont Hospital Medical Library Card and logon to MiLE. If you do not have a library card and are a current Beaumont physician or employee, apply for one at either Medical Library. Beaumont I.D. must be presented at the time of application.

  4. Search for your book. Note that there are three sets of libraries (Health Sciences, MiLE 1, MiLE 2). If one does not produce the book you want, try the other.

  5. Select the copy you want.

  6. Books will be delivered to the Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak Medical Library and then routed to the Troy Medical Library, if necessary.

  7. Indicate "Need by Month [ ] Day [ ]". (This means that you do NOT want the book if it cannot be delivered by the date you enter in the boxes.

  8. Insert your email address. Please double check for accuracy.

  9. Print out or write down the Request Number for your transaction for later tracking.

MiLE - Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Problems logging on to MiLE

    1. I cannot logon using my Beaumont Hospital Medical Library barcode. What do I do?
Contact the Circulation Desk to check on the status of your barcode. It won't work for MiLE if it has expired or is blocked for excessive fines or overdues. Only Beaumont Hospital employees and physicians in good standing can logon to MiLE to request books. Call the circulation desk at (248) 898-1750.

    2. My Beaumont Hospital Medical Library barcode should work, but I still cannot logon. Now what?
Internet Explorer 5.5 (or higher) or Netscape 6.0 (or higher) is the recommended browser, and it needs to be Java enabled. For instructions to enable Java, go to the MiLE help screens.
Please note: The MiLE Web pages require the use of Java. Windows XP does not come bundled with Java support, nor does the Internet Explorer 6.0 (or higher) download. MiLE users running Windows XP and IE 6.0 will need to have the Java plug-in downloaded and installed. The plug-in can be downloaded for free from Sun Microsystems. Also, please ensure that your browser has Java enabled.

    3. I do not have a Beaumont Hospital Medical Library barcode. Can I still use the MiLE Service?
If you are affiliated with another MiLE participating library, select that library and logon with that library barcode. Or, you may search the MiLE catalog by logging on as Guest. Guest users are not able to make requests using MiLE, but need to use traditional Interlibrary Loan services instead.

  2. Questions about my MiLE requests

    1. I haven't been notified about the book I requested. How do I find out about it?
You can logon to MiLE to check the status of your requests. Click here to logon. If you still have questions, contact the Beaumont Hospital Interlibrary Loan Office at (248) 898-1744. Patrons are notified via e-mail when their books are received at the Medical Library for pickup, when their requests cannot be filled, and when their requests have expired (30 day default).

    2. The items I want cannot be requested. What do I do?
The items may not be requestable. Only books can be requested from MiLE libraries at this time. For other items, you can go to the libraries to use them there (hospital libraries may have visitor restrictions). Visit the libraries' web sites to check on hours and local policies about on-site use for guests. For a list of MiLE libraries and their Web sites, see http://www.mile.coop. You may also visit our Library for traditional interlibrary loan requests.

    3. The item I want shows in the online catalog as on the shelf at one of the Beaumont Hospital Medical Libraries, but I can't find it on the shelf. Now what?
The MiLE Service won't let you request an item that is on the shelf. Please contact our Medical Library for a traditional interlibrary loan request instead. You can also go to the Circulation Desk and have a search placed on the item so we can determine if it is missing.

  3. Problems searching the MiLE catalog

    1. MiLE response time is slow.
A search of the MiLE virtual catalog can take 40 seconds or more. Results are retrieved from all catalogs and de-duped before being presented. Please be patient.

    2. I cannot find the item I'm looking for.
Make sure you are searching the Books catalog. Only books can be requested from MiLE libraries at this time. There are three sections to search, Health Sciences, MiLE 1 and Mile 2.

    3. . I cannot get back to the screen I need.
For the best results, you should use the navigation buttons in the MiLE software rather than the back button in your browser.

The MiLE catalog is available 24 hours a day from your home, office or the Library. The recommended browser is Internet Explorer 5.5 (or higher) or Netscape 6.0 (or higher).
